A sinking garage floor does not automatically mean the home’s foundation is failing. 

In many homes, the garage floor slab is a slab-on-grade surface that can settle independently from the foundation walls or footings. The slab depends on compacted soil beneath it, while the surrounding walls and footings carry structural loads. 

Depending on how the home was built, the garage floor may be an interior slab poured inside stem walls or foundation walls. In that case, the garage slab rests on compacted soil inside the foundation area, while the surrounding walls and footings support the structure. 

Either the slab, the foundation, or both can move. That is why the full symptom pattern matters.
