Underpinning

Reinforce Existing Foundations with Expert Underpinning Solutions

Foundation underpinning is the process of strengthening and stabilizing an existing structure’s foundation to provide enhanced support. At Helicon, we specialize in underpinning solutions that reinforce foundations by either expanding the current foundation to increase its load-bearing capacity or adding new structural elements to transfer the load to deeper, more stable soil layers.

Whether you’re dealing with settlement issues or need to ensure the long-term stability of your structure, our underpinning services provide the necessary support to protect your property for years to come.

A Strong, Secure Foundation with Helicon’s Underpinning System

Raise Your Home Back to Where It Belongs With Underpinning

What is Underpinning?

Underpinning is the process of inserting steel piers (push piers) deeply into the ground beneath a foundation.

To address settlement issues, underpinning can prevent settling as well as raise your home back to it’s original height.

The underpinning methods that Helicon offers are a rock solid foundation repair solution to secure the foundation of a structure.

  • A repair project using underpins starts with a bracket that is installed at each pier location in accordance with the structural engineer’s plan.
  • Then, a large steel frame with a hydraulic ram on top slides onto the bracket and pushes 4ft sections of pipe down through the opening in each bracket. The pipes are driven to the bedrock or load-bearing strata, well below the depth of soils affected by seasonal changes in the water table.
  • After the underpinning piers have been driven into the ground and installed to the appropriate load-bearing capacity, they are hydraulically jacked to sufficiently support the structure. At this time, cracks will start to close and doors and windows will function normally again.
  • The brackets are bolted down with a top steel plate leaving a portion of the threaded rods intact. Upon completion of this phase, the underpins are practically invisible after the repair is finished since they are beneath the ground.

To picture a structure that has been underpinned, visualize your home’s foundation resting upon underground steel piers. These steel piers safely and permanently transfer the weight of a structure onto solid bedrock or load-bearing strata. Underpinning piers are used to stabilize a structure and have the ability to return it to its original elevation.

Advantages of Underpinning

Function

Underpinning is a repair method used to fix sinkhole damaged structures. It utilizes underground steel piers to stabilize the foundation. Concrete foundations usually shift because the upper level of soil is loose, or because a sinkhole has occurred within the vicinity. However, there is always a level of stratum deeper within the earth that is capable of bearing the load of the foundation.

Steps to Installation

The process of underpinning a foundation involves extending the foundation’s load onto steel piers that extend down to solid bedrock. Piers can often lift structures to their original level. Resistance piers, as they are sometimes called, are effective for extremely large structures as well as smaller residential dwellings.
