What is Soil Stabilization?

Soil stabilization is a method where cementing materials, special soils or other chemicals are added into natural soils to improve its strength and composition to support load-bearing structures like shopping malls, commercial buildings, manufacturing facilities, warehouses, highways, and bridge piers, etc. Stabilization can be achieved through various grouting techniques and by mixing the stabilizing materials and natural soil together to create a homogeneous mixture.
It can also be conducted in undisturbed soils by deploying as a process known as chemical grouting. Chemical grouting allows grouting materials to be injected into the ground to fill voids, cracks, and fissures. This technique works great for weak soils that are causing settlement problems. The two techniques we often utilize for soil stabilization are compaction grouting and chemical grouting.

Helicon’s Soil Stabalization Techniques:

Compaction Grouting

Cap and Seal the Limestone Surface While Filling Voids

Chemical Grouting

Chemical grouting, or permeation grouting, involves injecting a low-viscosity chemical grout into the soil to fill voids and enhance its stability.

Polyurethane Grouting

(Poly Foam)
A mixture of hydrophilic and hydrophobic polyurethane resins, engineered to deliver the ideal solution for crack repair and void grouting applications.

Permeation Grouting

Ground improvement technique that involves injecting grout into soil to fill cracks and voids.

Slurry Grouting

improves the strength and stability of open-graded soils, making them suitable for construction purposes

Micropiles

For foundation support, slope stabilization, seismic retrofitting, and Earth retention.

Polyurethane Grouting

(Poly Foam)
A mixture of hydrophilic and hydrophobic polyurethane resins, engineered to deliver the ideal solution for crack repair and void grouting applications.

Chemical Grouting
We deploy chemical grouting techniques for several residential and commercial soil stabilization solutions. This method can be used in loose soils for controlling water seepage in areas that are subjected to water tables, excavation support for roads and highways, tunneling, re-leveling concrete slabs and loading docks, foundations, and more. It works by injecting chemical grout under pressure that permeates weak soils until it produces a homogeneous mass. The results are reduced permeability and increased strength.

In most cases, a sleeve-port pipe is used over pre-drilled holes for injection. These tubes contain sleeves that are evenly spaced and installed into the drilled hole, which allows for the disbursement of chemical grout to flow to various discrete and multiple locations from within the same pipe. This technique is very effective for loose soils or voids. It can also be used as a solution for areas with high water tables, which is quite commonly found throughout the Sunshine State.

Some of the chemical grouts we utilize include polyurethane (Poly Foam), epoxy, and acrylamide/acrylate. Much in the same fashion as compaction grouting, chemical grouting also has benefits for home and business owners as well as general contractors:

  • Environmentally friendly
  • Simple and easy construction process
  • Fast installation
  • Can be used for multiple situations
  • No soil disturbance and cost-effective
Municipal and Commercial Business Applications
There are many applications where geotechnical compaction & chemical grouting can be used. We have helped numerous municipalities and commercial businesses with their infrastructure and soil stabilization projects including:

  • Sub-grade densification and re-leveling for oil tanks, water reserves, and agricultural storage bins
  • Foundation rehabilitation for wind, power, and water substations.
  • Increased bearing capacity for additional structure load such as the construction of extra levels on existing parking garages
  • Sinkhole stabilization under roads and parking lots
  • Sub-grade improvement for historic building re-leveling and stabilization
Sinkhole Soil Stabilization
Our sinkhole repair and stabilization generally consist of:

  • Deep Compaction Grouting: Deep compaction grouting is injected into the sinkhole’s throat to essentially choke it off, so we can start the process of flow filling and stabilizing the sinkhole.
  • Backfilling the Sinkhole: Depending on the stability of the sinkhole, we can also backfill the sinkhole with a flowable material either mixed on-site or delivered from a ready-mix facility.

Once a sinkhole has been stabilized, compaction grouting can be conducted in overburden soils in various patterns to locate and densify weakened soils and voids in the ground that may not have propagated to the surface or collapsed yet.

Soil Stabilization FAQ

What is the first thing I should do when searching for a soil stabilization contractor?
The first thing would be to look to see if the business is licensed and insured. The next step would be to check online reviews for the company. Online reviews like Google Reviews and the BBB are an unbiased look into how the company delivers on its promises. The reputation of the company doing the soil stabilization is paramount to selecting the right contractor for your geotech project. Check if the company states years of experience vs. years in business. If it is a new company with someone who has experience with a different company, that could be a potential red flag if you have a warranty claim. Always verify how long the actual business has been in operation.
Are the soil stabilization techniques safe for the environment?
We care about your environmental safety, which is why we only use phthalate-free polyurethane resins for concrete repair. Unfortunately, some contractors still use grouting resins manufactured outside the U.S. that contain this known ocean pollutant. In fact, our resins are NSF certified for cases where it may contact drinking water.
