Protecting a Davis Islands Waterfront Home in Tampa from Hurricane Storm Surge with Seawall Stabilization

Tampa Bay, FL
Market: Residential
Solution: Soil Stabilization
Services: One-Part & Two-Part Polyurethane Injections (Chemical Grout)
The Project
When two powerful hurricanes struck Florida last year, the storm surge put Davis Islands’ waterfront homes to the test. For one homeowner on Bahama Cir in Tampa Bay, the aftermath revealed a hidden but dangerous problem: soil loss and instability along her 20-year-old seawall.
Although the seawall’s structure remained intact, erosion had carved away the soil beneath and around it, weakening its ability to protect her property. Without immediate action, the next major storm could have caused costly structural damage—potentially forcing a full seawall replacement.
Recognizing the urgency, the homeowner called Helicon, Florida’s trusted experts in soil stabilization and foundation repair. Our inspection confirmed the wall was sound but the surrounding soil had to be stabilized before hurricane season.
Her story caught the attention of Spectrum Bay News 9, who featured the project in a segment warning other waterfront property owners about the risks of ignoring soil erosion. As our CEO Jay Silver explained in the interview, spotting early warning signs—like sinking pavers, soft grass, or mounds of sand by the seawall—can prevent catastrophic failures.
The Challenge
Repairing a large seawall after two hurricanes is never simple. This project came with three major challenges:
- Significant Soil Loss – The erosion had created large voids that compromised the seawall’s stability.
- Hurricane-Season Urgency – With storm season approaching, time was critical to prevent further damage.
- Limited Access – Tight backyard access meant our team had to run specialized injection hoses from the front driveway all the way to the seawall.
Our low-footprint polyurethane injection equipment was the perfect solution for this kind of restricted access, allowing us to complete the job efficiently without heavy excavation.
The Solution
Helicon implemented a two-part seawall stabilization plan designed for long-term resilience:
Step 1 – One-Part Polyurethane Foam Injection (SW-RP1)
- Injected 36 gallons directly behind the seawall to fill voids, stop water intrusion, and reinforce stability.
Step 2 – Deep Soil Densification with Two-Part Polyurethane Grout
- Applied 10 pounds of material beneath the ground to compact and strengthen the soil where erosion had taken the greatest toll.
Step 3 – JET Filter System Installation (via trusted partner)
- Installed in the seawall’s weep holes to relieve hydrostatic pressure while preventing soil loss.
- Designed to remain clog-free, extending the seawall’s life expectancy to 100+ years.
The Results
- Soil stability permanently restored around the seawall.
- Drainage system installed to protect against future storm surge damage.
- Homeowner peace of mind before the next hurricane season.
This Davis Islands project is a textbook example of how Helicon’s specialized soil stabilization solutions protect Florida’s coastal properties. By acting early, the homeowner avoided a full seawall replacement—saving time, money, and property value.
