Orlando, FL Dam Stabilization – Polyurethane Grouting for Long-Term Erosion Control
Orlando, FL
Market: Commercial
Solution: Soil Stabilization & Erosion Control
Services: One-Part AP600 Polyurethane Injection (Chemical Grout)
The Project
In the CPH-Valencia Water District of Orlando, FL, a critical dam structure was showing advanced signs of instability. Years of soil loss and progressive erosion had weakened its foundation, creating voids and reducing load-bearing capacity.
This was more than a maintenance concern—it was a public safety and operational risk. Left unaddressed, the instability could have led to:
- Structural failure of the dam
- Disruption of essential water management operations
- Potential environmental damage and economic losses
Recognizing the urgency, the water district called on Helicon to deliver a reliable, long-lasting stabilization solution that would halt further degradation and restore the dam’s integrity.
The Challenge
While much of Helicon’s work involves residential foundation repair, our team also specializes in high-stakes commercial and infrastructure projects—including work for organizations like NASA.
Stabilizing a dam presents unique challenges:
- Scale and access – A large structure with multiple erosion points
- Moisture-rich environment – Materials must perform in saturated conditions
- Long-term resilience – Solution must withstand decades of water pressure and weather exposure
For this project, Helicon selected AP600 polyurethane grout, a high-performance hydrophobic resin specifically engineered for geotechnical stabilization in wet environments.
The Solution
Step 1 – Targeted Injection Strategy
Our crew identified and mapped the most erosion-affected sections of the dam. Precision drilling allowed us to place injection points directly into compromised soil zones along the dam’s length.
Step 2 – AP600 Polyurethane Injection
- Total material used: 394 gallons of AP600
- Reaction process: Upon contact with moisture, AP600 expanded rapidly to fill voids and permeate loose or sandy soils
- Resulting structure: A dense, closed-cell, water-impermeable mass that prevents further washout
Step 3 – Strength & Adhesion
Unlike traditional cement grouts that can crack or deteriorate over time, AP600 forms a permanent bond with surrounding soils and structures. This ensures:
- Long-term stability
- Resistance to shifting, even in saturated conditions
- Ongoing erosion control without repeated maintenance
Why AP600 is Ideal for Dam & Infrastructure Projects
- Hydrophobic reaction – Expands in the presence of water, perfect for wet environments
- High compressive strength – Reinforces load-bearing soils for decades
- Permanent bonding – Prevents separation or loss of integrity over time
- Fast installation – This project was completed in just five days with minimal disruption
The Results
The CPH-Valencia dam is now:
- Structurally reinforced against further settlement or erosion
- Protected by a water-impermeable foundation layer
- Stable enough to ensure uninterrupted water district operations
By addressing the problem at its source, Helicon delivered a long-term, low-maintenance solution that will safeguard the dam for decades to come.
